I don’t want to give an impression that I am some kind of self-made millionaire and/or online income guru. I am still a fairly small online entrepreneur. At the time I wrote this article, I have approximately 40 domain and hosting customers. I have started gaining good momentum now and this number is growing ever more faster. I have acquired most of these customers via eBay. I am really excited the way this is shaping up.

First, those of you who think this is a ‘get-rich-quick’ scheme, please leave immediately. This is not going to make you rich overnight. In fact, this is like any business where dedication, hard work and smart thinking is required. A significant investment is also required. So those of you who are looking to make quick buck, this article is not for you. However, those of you who are looking to setup a sustainable, long-term, steadily growing business opportunity, this is a good read.

Second thing you need to know is that the world of domain registration and website hosting is already crowded where the big boys are already sitting at the top of the food chain. They hold the majority of the market share. A market like this is extremely difficult to break into, let alone making any profits. So the idea is to use a very unique and never before seen type of approach to force your way in. One way of doing this is to pour hundreds of thousands of dollars in marketing and hope for return on investment to come somewhere 2-3 years down the line. However, most of us don’t have those thousands of dollars to invest – do we? Neither do we have the time on hand to wait 2-3 years. So we need an idea where we can make a quick entry, at a much lower initial investment and grow at a much faster pace.

So here is what I do (you are welcome to copy me) …

What you need of course is a solid source for domain names and hosting products. In order to sell domain names, you need to be ICANN accredited and for providing hosting service you need to have your own data center where you can host a bunch of web servers. Of course, most of us don’t have the money nor the resources required to do any of this. So we need to do the next best thing. We need to partner with someone who has all these resources and who can let us re-sell these products and services for a premium. The most reliable and most widely used domain and hosting reseller is ResellersPanel. The best part is, it is FREE TO JOIN!

Once you have a free ResellersPanel account, you have to setup the pricing you wish to use for your domain registrations and hosting products. Once you do this, you are now set to resell hosting and domain registrations.

Now comes the most difficult part… acquiring the real paying customers!

Like I said in the beginning, this market is already overcrowded with big players like GoDaddy and HostGator already capturing the majority of the market share. There is no stopping them and standing against them will need heavy investments and solid financial backing (which most of us don’t have… otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this article would you??).  This is where you have to piggy-back on marketplaces like eBay.

How can you use eBay? You can use one of the following approaches:

1. List new domain registration service for really cheap and try to make money using advertising to fund the investment: In this option, you will list new domain names on auction for really cheap (next to nothing) price for the first year. I do it like 77 Cent domain name for the first year. Showcase this as a special promotional offer from your new hosting and domain registration site. Provide details regarding this special offer on your hosting site that you got when you created your ResellersPanel account (in your members area, pay attention to the top menu bar link that says “My store”.) This is the free hosting site you have received from them. They keep it updated, all you do is promote this site. You can add a custom header and footer to this site under “Marketing Tools” menu option. Add the details around your special promotion of cheap domain names in the footer section and provide link to this section from your eBay auction. Don’t forget to add Google Adsense or similar ads near on this site. Let us see what happens when you do this:
• First, you attract attention of many potential customers with a unbelievably low entry price for domain registration. Most of them come to your hosting site from your eBay auction listing. Once a visitor is on your site, they can make you money in various different ways (use your imagination!).
• Second, your hosting site will get some quality exposure. There may be some sales you can extract out of this. Typically, one sale is seen for 20 to 30 auction listings. This is just my experience. You might experience little different conversion rates.
2. List the domains on auction and use additional incentive to extract full price: There is another approach where you get full price for the domain registration but provide something additional to the buyer. Following ideas have worked for me on eBay:
• I started providing 1 full year of one-way text link from all of my existing sites. This has worked really well for me. I have 9 to 10 established sites at any given time and getting a back-link from each was definitely worth the full price of the domain. This additional product did not cost me anything but I got the new domain customers very easily.
• In some cases, I offerred banner or logo design at no additional cost to the customers who bought domain name and/or hosting from me. This also worked very well to acquire some more customers. Of course, this meant that I had to take the banner/logo creation efforts for no additional compensation. If you are ok to work little extra to acquire those potential customers, this approach might work really well for you.

Apart from above two approaches, I used few other techniques to gather more hosting and domain customers. Some of these are as follows:

1. Check among your friends and family and see if anyone is looking to create a website. Ask them to sign up for the domain and hosting via your site. Since the service is reliable and very professional, they will also not complain.
2. I created an e-book that clearly explains how to create a website. This book provides very useful information that many newbies are looking for and at the same time I used the opportunity to promote my hosting site in this book.

The only thing left once you have the payment from your new customer is to go to the members menu in your ResellersPanel account and put the order in manually. You will be paying for the first year of their domain registration or hosting on your own. Don’t worry, they will not see your credit card and/or any other details. Just don’t forget to go to the recurring manager link in your members area and cancel the recurring subscription or you will be charged again next year when it is time to renew their domain/hosting. Idea is to get full price for the domain plus your commission from the next year onwards as long as they are your customer.

There you have it. Initially, there is hard work and significant investment but as time passes, your investment per new customer goes down. See the chart below that clearly shows how my investment (out-of-pocket expense) for acquiring each new customer went down slowly over time. This happens because, you continue to grow your ad revenue, sales to your existing customers, acquiring new customers at higher entry points etc.

1. They are honest and real organization – I have never had any issues receiving payments.
2. They are truly global organization – I come from India and they never had any issues working with me.
3. They are selling one of the highest demand products today – hosting and domains.
4. They seem to be making constant progress and upgrades to their offerings – sign of an active and forward-thinking management.
5. They seem to be always on par with the market treds and offerings so that we (affiliate or resellers) can stay competetive.

Many such reasons have made me believe that it is a real and honest online business opportunity. They are one opportunity that can really make you money out of the millions of scams out there.

Free method # 1 – It may sound strange to read but the top most effective free way of generating active visitors is to create email signature and forum signature with your referral link in it. Yes! Many of my top affiliates have used this trick which has worked wonders for them. So do this right now. Every email you send out may potentially build future income for you.

Free method # 2 – Address book. You may be surprised but this is really a neat trick. Just look at your contacts and address books. On an average, a normal person has anywhere from 50 to 60 contacts in their address book. Just start going down the address book and send personalized messages to your friends and family introducing my site. Don’t forget to put your referral link in your mails. It is perfectly OK to tell them that you will get paid if they visit the site. It is also perfectly fine with me if you also ask them to go and signup for the affiliate program. In fact many of my top affiliates have started chain mails and group messages where they request their friends and family members to forward the message to their contacts and so on. This can spread like wildfire!!!

Free method # 3 – If you have some time on your hands, you can surf the web for couple of hours a day and make a list of forums and online communities which are related to the program you wish to promote. Sign up and actively participate in the discussions. Once you get a good idea and feel that you can contribute to the discussion, try to find various acceptable ways of introducing your URLs to the community. Use your referral link in the discussions wherever appropriate. This may take some time but if done correctly can literally bring in hundreds of active visitors.
Free method # 4 – Blog posts and articles. If you have some writting skills and littlebit of time hand, you can always create your own articles or blog website and put your reviews about the programs that you want to promote. Once spidered by search engines, this can give you unlimited free quality leads. There are many sites and services out there that will allow you to submit articles. There are free services that will submit articles you have written to various places. Don’t forget to embed your referral URLs in your articles.
Let me end this page with what will NOT work for generating traffic:

1 – Free autosurf sites – this will not give any active visitors to you. This is waste of time. Do not even try.

2 – Robots or spamming – This may give some visitors but the moment I find out, you are OUT! Don’t even think about this. I have zero tolerance for such things.

I can tell you from my experience that making money online needs a solid website with strong flow of constant visitors – especially if you are going to start with little or zero investment out of pocket. The problem is that creating such a website is a big challenge for a new person. Building a steady flow of useful visitors to this website is even bigger challenge. It is not enough to know ‘How to create a website’, you must also know ‘How to make money from your website.’ Also one very important lesson I learnt from my experience – “You will never make money if you build your site only with money in mind.” In other words, think first of some practical purpose or use of a website. Define what your website’s core message is going to be and build it as a service or product offering instead of creating a website that just simply talks about money.

So … coming back to the components of a money-making website, let me get straight to the point now. Any website basically has following components that earn money for its owner:

1. Products or services that can be sold on your website - This is the main bread and butter for the site owner. Believe me, you need a core set of products or services that you must have that you can promote on your website. If you are an individual you cannot really manage a huge online store selling hundreds of thousands of products. You need to focus on few niche products and it always helps if you have some expert knowledge about the products and services you are trying to sell on your site. The beauty of today’s online world is that this does not have to be your own products or services! You can very well have a website that is helping someone else sell their products and you are just working for the commissions. In fact, I would recommend that you go for this approach. It will save you lot of overheads.
2. Content – Text and information given on the website is called as ‘content’. This includes videos, images and everything the website holds. More valuable the information is, more weightage the website has. Content is very important. Content is what makes the website live or die. You must have quality, unique and legal content on your website. This is not really a big deal. Anyone with some good knowledge about the products and services they are trying to promote or sell can always create a good content. The blog software like the one used by this site can be a good tool to create a good quality content. Without the content your website will look empty and will loose its purpose. Your visitors will not be able to find anything and will eventually leave your website. Better the content, better is the holding capacity or repeat visitors.
3. Banner or text ads -This is the key component of any website that makes almost instant/quick and easy money for its owners.
